The TPP – and the CPTPP – was explicitly written for expansion. During the initial negotiations, for example, South Korea was seen as a likely future member. Recently, Thailand and Colombia have expressed interest in accession. Taiwan has done so, but its adherence to an agreement formulated as a mechanism for confrontation with China could lead to opposition from Beijing. The text of the TPP consisted of thirty chapters covering tariffs on goods and services, intellectual property rights (IP), e-commerce rules, labour and environmental standards, dispute settlement mechanisms and many other aspects of global trade. The aim of this ambitious mega-regional agreement, which spans several continents and covers around 40% of world trade, was to create a fully integrated economic area and establish uniform rules for global investment. For Obama, the pact was a way to ensure that “the United States — not countries like China — are the ones writing the rules of this century for the global economy.” Although the TPSEP agreement includes an accession clause and confirms “the commitment of members to promote the accession of other economies to this agreement”, such accession has not taken place. He also said that significant investments in U.S. workers and infrastructure are prerequisites for any new trade deal. The Economic Partnership Agreements are a programme for the creation of a free trade area (FTA) between the European Union and the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States. They respond to persistent criticism that the EU`s proposed non-reciprocal and discriminatory preferential agreements are WTO-inconsistent. The EPAs date back to the signing of the Cotonou Agreement. The EPAs with the different regions are in different scores. In 2016, EPAs were to be signed with three African regional economic communities (East African Community, Economic Community of West African States and Southern African Development Community), but which faced challenges. Q12 [to be updated] In October 2018, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the UK would be admitted to the CPTPP “with open arms”, despite its geographical remoteness, underscising the potential of CPTPP member states to use the agreement as a global diplomatic framework in the coming years. “This is another wake-up call for the U.S.,” says Wendy Cutler, vice president of the Asian Society Policy Institute and a longtime U.S.
